ALFI Cedar Wood Freestanding Bathtub

Before there was porcelain there was wood, and cedar was the wood people chose. It resists water, it smells faintly of forest when it's warm, and it holds heat far better than anything ceramic.

These are built from solid cedar — Chinese or Japanese cryptomeria — and reinforced with electroplated iron bands finished in black and gold. The look is old and deliberate: a piece that would sit as easily in a Kyoto bathhouse as in a converted barn.

Each includes a removable wooden seat that sits inside the tub, and a hanging wooden basket for what you want within reach. The 65" model is built for two, with two seats and two headrests, and arrives with its tub filler and hand-held shower head already fitted.

Installation is genuinely simple. There is nothing to build in. Set the tub where you want it and connect the drain — and the water line if your model includes a filler. Most of these can be placed in an afternoon.

On caring for it: no special products. Bath salts and mild soap are fine as long as you rinse thoroughly. Never use harsh chemicals on the wood. A clean towel, hot water, mild soap after each use, and cedar will outlast most things in the room.
